Oregon Cannabis Regulations
State Cannabis Overview: Cannabis is legal for both medical and recreational use in Oregon. The state of Oregon was the first to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of Marijuana and one of the first few states to legalize the use and sale of medical Marijuana.
The state approved medical Cannabis in 1998 and went on to legalize the use and sale of recreational Cannabis in 2015. The state has made over $5 billion in sales since the launch of recreational Cannabis sales. The industry’s future looks promising as Oregon is ready to resume issuing Cannabis business licenses in the first quarter of 2024.
Licensing: The state of Oregon started issuing licenses to recreational Cannabis businesses in 2016 and has since issued thousands of those. Oregon regulates the use and sale of adult-use Cannabis through the OLCC (Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission).
The state charges a non-refundable application fee of $500 and a registration fee of $3,500 and issues licenses for the following Cannabis businesses.
Local Authority: Municipalities in Oregon establish and enforce regulations on operation hours, land use, manner of operation, local zoning, and more. Local governments have also made futile moves in the past to levy a sales tax on Marijuana products.
